2. Instrumentation
A GDMS instrument consists of a glow discharge source to form ions, a mass spectrometer comprising a mass separator and a detector, and a data acquisition and processing system (Figure 7 ).
2.1 Glow discharge sources
Schematically, a glow discharge source consists of a cathode (the sample to be analyzed), an anode, and an insulating block separating the two electrodes. The source is pressurized with argon, before the electrical discharge is applied between the two electrodes.
Various glow discharge lamp geometries have been, and are still being, developed for use in GDMS
