The measurand Y (here the volume of the AVAP) is not measured directly, but determined from N other quantities X1, X2, ..., XN through a functional relationship f :
The estimate of Xi is denoted by xi.
The input quantities X1, X2..., XN on which the output quantity Y depends can themselves be regarded as measurands which in turn depend on other quantities, leading to a complex functional relationship.
