5. Ultramicroelectrodes
The term ultramicroelectrodes (UME) refers to electrodes whose surface area is considerably smaller than that of standard indicator electrodes: in the order of μm2 instead of mm2.
The emergence of very small electrodes poses a vocabulary problem. It is customary to refer to electrodes commonly used in voltammetry, which are approximately 1 mm in size, as microelectrodes.
