2. Means of measurement: the sensor
By definition, as the interface between the physical world and the electronic instrument, the sensor is at the head of the measurement chain. It is chosen according to the physical quantity to be measured and, where several types exist, according to the expected performance of the acquisition system (accuracy, response time, etc.).
Many conventional sensors (in the sense that they are commercially available) are analog in nature. The reason for this is both practical – since our perception of the environment is continuous –, and historical – since analog electronics were developed first (at a time when computers were still mechanical).
