The optical microscope (some say photonic, as opposed to electronic) is the oldest, especially in the field of visible light, since man has long used accessories to enlarge what he sees.

The beginnings of this microscopy are presented in box [1].

The latest efforts by opticians have been guided by the need to digitize images for storage, or to derive information from them through appropriate processing. Quantitative microscopy, introduced by the "flying spot" technique
