Since their industrial development over a quarter of a century ago, optical fibers have made their mark in communications. They have now embarked on other avenues, such as fiber optic sensors.
Communication equipment and fiber optic sensors differ in the nature of the transmitted signal. The former is designed to carry the signal with the minimum of disturbance, while the latter must deliver the strongest possible signal in response to a specified disturbance.
Fiber optic sensors nevertheless benefit from the qualities of optical fibers used in telecommunications: electrical insulation, immunity to electromagnetic interference, intrinsic safety, resistance to high temperatures and strong irradiation.
