3. Thermal stresses

When parts assembled with pre-tightening are subjected to significant temperature variations, the stress variations caused either by a difference between the temperature of the bolt TB and the temperature of the parts TP  , or by a difference between the linear expansion coefficients of the bolts αLB and the parts αLP  , are generally not negligible.

3.1 General expression of stress variation

If we denote T0 as the reference temperature (temperature at prestressing), we have:

  • Variation in bolt length due to temperature variation (TB– T0):

    ΔBT=αLB⋅LB(TB−T0)
