Overview

ABSTRACT

This article presents single-span beams, the most common construction and structure in civil engineering. Without returning to geometric characteristics and the normal mechanical characteristics of resistance sections, a unit load method, which is easy to compute, is used to calculate the stress levels on cross sections by integrating the effects of force or by using a torque unit. The results are presented in detail by the means of a table. A simple application example is developed in more detail and the results of simple load cases are detailed.

 INTRODUCTION

In this article, which follows on from the form on circular rings and arches with varied end conditions [Form. B 5 021] , we consider single-span straight beams, the basic element of the most common civil engineering constructions and structures.

Without going back over the geometrical and mechanical resistance characteristics of the usual sections, which were the subject of a previous article [Form. B 5 020] , we propose a method for calculating the stresses of cross-sections by integrating the effects of force or unit torque. Current programming tools (spreadsheets) will enable us to solve the most complex load cases. A simple application example is developed in detail.

The results of the most frequent simple load cases are shown in the table 1 at the end of this article.
