The complexity of the engine control system means that its operation must be continuously self-diagnosing, i.e. the engine control itself must be able to analyze the operation of each of its components to detect any faults. By diagnostics, we mean fault detection functions, fault management functions and the association of degraded operating modes to ensure minimum operation until the repairer intervenes.
