To design a cylinder head, a certain amount of input data is required. These are gathered in a specification, which must contain at least the following information.

• Number of screws securing cylinder head to crankcase

  Although some manufacturers have adopted 5 or 6 screws to distribute forces more evenly, 4 screws per cylinder are sufficient for bores up to 90 mm, provided the cylinder head is sufficiently rigid and designed to transmit and distribute clamping forces to the cylinder head gasket crimp around the cylinder.
