3. Optimizing transport friction
Tribosystem properties generally require a number of measures to mitigate friction, including fine-tuning of surface topography, materials and coatings technology, and improved lubricants. The tribological performance of a contact is therefore closely linked to the mechanism in which it operates.
In this section, after a general analysis of losses in an internal-combustion engine, we will review the main contacts generating the most significant friction losses for the automotive transport sector. For each of them, the current level of tribological performance will be presented, and the analysis will focus on the gains expected with the use of technological solutions resulting from recent research work. The successful use of recovery systems depends to a large extent on their efficiency and resistance to wear.
