Aerospace propulsion systems are generally of two main types: jet engines and propeller engines.
To simplify, some –, even when they use ambient air –, expel the mass of propellant they have ingested at high speed (think of an octopus, for example), while others stir up a large volume of ambient air (think of swimming or rowing).
