Volumetric supercharging of displacement compressors

The first supercharger solutions appeared at the beginning of the last century, with the Frenchman L. Creux registering patents for the scroll compressor in 1905.

The volumetric supercharging technique was first used for aircraft engines to compensate for the loss of power at altitude due to lower atmospheric pressure. As early as 1908, Renault presented two V8 engines, followed the same year by Chadwick and in 1912 by Hispano-Suiza.

In 1921, the first automotive application appeared under the Daimler brand, but it was Fiat that first reaped the benefits of this technology when, in 1923, it became the first manufacturer to win a Grand Prix with the Fiat 804-405 at the European Grand Prix at Monza with Carlo Salamano.
