3. Digital study
The final objective of the numerical study is to simulate the shear test of a clinched point; the numerical tool, after validation, can then be used to analyze the mechanical behavior of the clinch component in shear. All the information obtained from the numerical simulations is then used to develop the analytical models.
To numerically simulate the shear test, a series of data are required, such as the actual geometry of the clinch, the residual stresses and the deformations due to the clinching itself. To obtain a good estimate of these parameters, which are difficult to measure on a test specimen, one solution is to numerically simulate the clinching process.
