The paste extrusion abrasion process is particularly useful for polishing, radiusing and finishing edges in inaccessible internal passages. Surface finishes of 0.05 µm can be achieved, and micro-machining can be carried out successfully on materials as soft as aluminum or as hard as ceramics, carbides and nickel alloys.
The aluminum extrusion die in figure 4a was treated with abrasive paste extrusion to improve the surface finish from 1.9 µm to 0.18 µm in a cycle time of 5 min. Figure 4b shows the teeth before and after polishing.
