3. Laser-assisted machining (UAL)
Laser assistance does not act specifically on the cutting zone, but directly on the material to be machined, by heating the surface upstream of the tool passage. After a description of the possibilities for integrating assistance into the machine tool, the effects on material machinability and surface integrity will be discussed. More specifically, the evolution of residual stresses on the part will be detailed.
Laser assistance involves equipping the machine tool with a laser focusing head, which heats the workpiece a few millimeters upstream of the tool. The laser power required is of the order of a few kilowatts. As early as the late 1970s, CO
