4.1 Physics of mode I and mode II propagation

Now that we've seen how to measure the rate of critical energy restitution in Mode I and Mode II, let's try to understand why these two values are so different. Indeed, if we look at some typical composite values, we can see that mode II toughness is always higher than mode I, and up to 2 to 3 times higher (table 1 ).
