The load capacity of bearings is determined by the permissible Hertzian pressure in the rolling element/raceway contact. The shape of the pressure field in the contact depends on the geometric profile of the rollers. In the case of a cylindrical roller subjected to a centered load, edge effects cause stress peaks at the ends of the roller (Figure
