3. Different types of laser
The sheer diversity of lasers makes rational classification difficult. The following classification, based essentially on the nature of the amplifying medium, is widely accepted.
3.1 Solid-state lasers
The amplifier medium is a solid, and more specifically a solid passive matrix (crystal, glass) doped with metal ions, which are the real active components.
The active medium is usually pumped by laser diode arrays designed to emit in the absorption band of the active ion.

Neodymium laser
The most common active ion is neodymium (Nd 3+ ) dispersed in aluminum yttrium garnet (YAG).
