1. Measurement methods
This measurement is mainly carried out using capillary viscometers, rotary instruments (with different geometries) or ball droppers. Various other devices are also used, but less frequently; moreover, it is not always clear that they measure shear viscosity per se. Whatever the basic geometry, the fundamental equations assume laminar flow and non-slip fluid at the wall. A 2013 article reviews how to detect slip and fracturing phenomena in the sample, and techniques for remedying them or making corrections to measurements
