3. Electrochemical cells
To carry out a potentiometric measurement, i.e. to relate the potential adopted by an electrode to the composition of the solution, the latter must be included in an electrochemical cell.
In most cases, an electrochemical cell for potentiometric measurement comprises two electrodes immersed in an ionically conductive liquid medium. This may be an aqueous or organic phase to which an electrolyte has been added, or even a naturally ionized liquid medium such as ionic liquids or molten salts.
