In the context of occupational risk prevention, the role of PPE is firstly outlined. European regulations governing the design and use of PPE, which are binding on manufacturers, distributors and company managers, are then discussed. The importance of the control mechanisms and harmonized European standards supporting the application of these regulations is particularly emphasized. Finally, elements of best practice for the selection, purchase, use and maintenance of PPE, based on the involvement of all personnel concerned (company directors, managers, employees) are provided.
The aim of this introductory article is to cover horizontal aspects and provide basic information on personal protective equipment (PPE). It will be supplemented by several others which will develop certain aspects linked, in particular, to their use, and will provide additional information specific to each of the major PPE categories (respiratory protective equipment, foot and leg protectors, protective clothing, protective helmets, hearing protectors, eye and face protectors, etc.).
