2. AMS extension
So far, we've restricted our review of VHDL to discrete-event systems. The AMS extension is an enhancement that allows continuous-time systems to be represented. Of course, VHDL can be used to describe systems for which a physical equivalent can be obtained by synthesis (on FPGAs or ASICs). For the time being, the AMS part is devoted solely to description and simulation.
2.1 History
During the renormalization process that led to VHDL'93, the "electronics-analog" community requested that their request for the development of a tool for their needs be taken into account. As it was too late for this renormalization deadline, IEEE launched a sub-program, SUB-PAR 1076.1, to study possible extensions in this direction....
