In this paragraph, we restrict ourselves to the case of a two-pole machine with three-phase stator and rotor.
Figure 5a shows a motor consisting of a stator and a rotor. Each carries a three-phase, two-pole winding, in accordance with the rotating field winding design.
The three stator windings are supplied with balanced, direct three-phase voltages u1, u 2, u 3; the three rotor windings are star-connected, and short-circuited. We'll assign subscripts "a, b, c" to the rotor quantities.
