Lithium thionyl chloride batteries (Li/SOCl2) belong to the category of liquid cathode batteries, the latter being an oxyhalide of which numerous variants have been devised and studied [30][31][32], the main ones being, in order: SOCl 2 (thionyl chloride), SO2Cl2 (sulfuryl chloride), POCl 3 (phosphorus oxytrichloride), BrCl3, BrF3, and so on. Only the first two couples have been the subject of numerous practical realizations, and only the first has led to significant industrial production, which continues today.
