4. Immunity Testing of a Device

4.1 General Information on Immunity Testing

The purpose of immunity testing is to ensure reasonable immunity to various environmental disturbances, even those that occur infrequently (static electricity discharges (SED), lightning), in order to prevent damage of varying severity resulting from malfunction. These consequences can range from mere inconvenience to serious property damage or even bodily injury.

For this reason, while manufacturers had no legal obligation to ensure the electromagnetic immunity of their devices until the early 1990s, certain countries—notably the European Community—introduced a legal requirement for compliance.
