As shown above, the piezoelectric transformer (PT) behaves mainly like a selective quadrupole: it can transmit power if it operates around its resonance, so its bandwidth is narrow. As a result, its efficiency and gain (transformation ratio) fluctuate widely with its load. This is a major difference from a magnetic transformer, where these two parameters are virtually constant over a wide range of loads and operating frequencies. This specificity has consequences for the conversion structures in which they are immersed, as well as their control modes.
