1. Solid insulation in the electrical industry
The primary function of an electrical insulator is to oppose the flow of current between conductors. The dielectric properties of the materials used are therefore of prime importance. Solid insulators also act as mechanical supports for conductors, and must generally transmit the heat generated in the various parts of the device by conduction.
The durability of their function is extremely important, as it determines the reliability of the devices and systems in which they are integrated. Insulation failure often leads to catastrophic situations, with potentially serious economic consequences.
