1. Symmetrical component method

1.1 Principle

  • Fortescue's symmetrical component method involves substituting a system of q "generator" quantities for an unbalanced system of q complex quantities, to define q balanced "q-phase" systems. These latter quantities are the symmetrical components of the initial system.

The transformation is performed by a complex matrix operator, called a Fortescue matrix, of order q, denoted [F q ].
