Thermal plasmas: production

The operation of a plasma torch is accompanied by nuisances that need to be dealt with.

• Noise

  Arc torches operating in the open emit a noise level of 110 to 130 dB. They must therefore be used in a suitable acoustic enclosure or, where possible, integrated into the process.

  RF torches generate much less noise, and are usually used in a controlled-atmosphere chamber at a pressure of a few tens of kPa.

• Ultraviolet radiation

  Plasma arc jets, and transferred arcs in particular, emit a great deal of UV radiation, which needs to be protected by appropriate means (eye protection in particular).
