The basic structure of a polyphase current switch is shown in figure

Waveform: the rectified voltage wave is formed by a succession of identical sinusoidal portions, each corresponding to an operating sequence:
if m is even, there are m sequences and the pulsation index is p = m ;
if m is odd, there are 2m sequences and the pulsation index is p = 2m .
An odd number of phases is therefore favorable, because for the same pulsation index, and therefore the same voltage ripple...
