In single-phase operation, the only way to measure reactive energy with an electromechanical meter is to use reactive energy meters with flux shifting by resistors in the voltage and current circuits (see D 4 952, figure 8 ). These meters have more or less the same performance as active energy meters, but the losses in their voltage circuit are somewhat higher, and they are more sensitive to the influence of frequency and self-heating.

Otherwise, the technology used, the compensation and the settings to be made are identical to those of electromechanical meters for measuring active energy.
