It is generally necessary to be able to fine-tune the speed of a rolling mill over a wide range. This requirement leads to the use of drive motors that enable torque to be adjusted independently of speed:
in the case of reversible rolling mills, the direction of travel must be reversed for each pass, which means that at the end of a pass, the motor torque must be reversed to slow the mill down from rolling speed to zero, and then accelerated in the opposite direction, from zero to rolling speed;
