Reactive power is a major concern, both in terms of cost and network disturbance, and one that we seek to address by installing capacitor banks on the network. When these batteries are switched on, voltage dips, and hence currents, must be limited. To achieve this, inductances are connected in series: the capacitor-inductance assemblies form filters that are calculated to avoid introducing resonances that would cause overvoltages on the installations. An overhead line or underground cable can be likened to a distributed structure of inductors and capacitors liable to oscillate and cause serious malfunctions in installations.
