The need to protect equipment against disturbances is becoming ever more pressing, partly because of the increasing susceptibility of the components and circuits of which they are made, and partly because of the growing number of sources of electrical overload to be considered. First and foremost, however, the cost-effectiveness and, where appropriate, the need for such protection must be considered.

• Protection can have two objectives:

  • savings in equipment operation;

  • safety in its operation.

  The saving will be the difference between the cost of the protection and the cost of the damaged components, plus any operating costs associated with the equipment's non-operation.
