In an electronic variable speed drive, speed is not varied by acting on the energy losses of the supply circuit, motor or load, but by modifying the presentation of the energy supplied to the motor so that it delivers the mechanical characteristics desired by the user.

While the initial focus was rightly on the energy-saving benefits of using these types of drive, it has become clear that the advantages of variable-speed electric drives are not limited to this aspect alone. Depending on the application, one or more of the following criteria (the list is not exhaustive) may be decisive.
