Hydropower is electrical energy generated from the mechanical energy of lakes, rivers and tides. Water drives turbines, which in turn drive alternators that transform mechanical energy into electricity.
A hydroelectric plant generally consists of a retaining structure (dam), which may be used to store water and direct it to a production plant, where the water sets a turbine in motion. As in other power generation systems, the turbine is associated with an alternator that transforms the kinetic energy of rotation into electrical energy, which is fed into the power grid. Electrical power is proportional to head and flow.
