Natural hydrogen has been known since the early 20th century. In the French Jura region, an article by Brégi (1909) shows hydrogen levels of 5.24% in a borehole at Vaux-en-Bugey
. In Australia, an article by Ward (1932) shows hydrogen concentrations of up to 84% in boreholes in the south of the country
