Future coal demand is highly uncertain. In its World Energy Outlook 2011 , the International Energy Agency proposes three highly contrasting scenarios (table 9 ). According to the New Policies Scenario, coal demand would increase by 24% between 2009 and 2035. According to the Current Policies Scenario, it would increase by 65%, and according to the 450 Scenario, it would decrease by 30%, again with reference to 2009.
