In a refrigeration machine or heat pump, the temperatures of the cold source qF and the hot source qC are far apart:
or because, at approximately constant condensation temperature qC, evaporation temperature qF decreases (refrigeration machine for low-temperature cold production, freezing);
or because, at approximately constant evaporation temperature qF, condensation temperature qC rises (heat pump for high-temperature heat production);
The compression ratio τ = pC/pF (pressure ratio) imposed on the compressor then rises because :
if qF decreases, pF decreases;
if qC increases, pC increases.
