2. General principles of personal dosimetry
A personal dosimeter is a device that detects and records the radiation received by a person, and translates it into an individual dose equivalent (see § 2.3 ) over a given period. This quantity is considered to be an estimate of the risk involved.
Whole-body" individual dosimeters can be classified as passive or active. Although this classification is also applicable to neutron dosimeters, due to the specific nature of neutron radiation fields, the corresponding instrumentation has been dealt with separately.
