The fairly qualitative aspects and simple formulas we have presented – for example the formulas for the factors p, f and n ([ give a partly false picture of neutronics: for its specialists, it is in fact a branch of physics that makes extensive use of scientific computing. Even if the physical sense and the notion of orders of magnitude remain absolutely necessary, it must be recognized that the development and use of calculation codes have become the main activity of neutron scientists. Obviously, it is not possible to develop this aspect in the time allotted to us. However, we feel it would be useful to say a few words in conclusion, to give the reader an idea of the general principles involved and the concerns of researchers, engineers and technicians working in this field.
