Overview

ABSTRACT

all technology rests on the choice of materials. More than any other sector, the nuclear industry requires the mastery of issues raised by the behavior of the materials used for building nuclear plants. The reasons are economic but mainly focused on achieving the highest possible safety level. In comparison to other sectors, the nuclear sector has its own constraints: the impact of irradiation on materials properties, the high mechanical and thermal stresses and the difficulty of access. Furthermore, the long periods of time involved require forecasting materials behavior and ageing in the long to very long term.

 INTRODUCTION

The smooth operation of nuclear facilities requires mastery of the problems raised by the behavior of the materials used in their construction. Compared to other fields, the conditions of the nuclear industry are specific in two particular respects: irradiation and its effects on material properties; and the long lifetimes involved, which require prediction of the behavior and aging of materials over the long, or even very long, term.
