Nuclear physics is one of the basic disciplines required to study nuclear systems.
While the focus here is on nuclear fission reactors and the associated fuel cycle (figure

a ), other nuclear applications should also be mentioned: thermonuclear fusion machines (magnetic confinement in a tokamak and inertial confinement by laser), particle gas pedals, hybrid nuclear accelerator/subcritical reactor systems, nuclear medicine, space, various industrial devices such as food irradiators, and so on. As a result, we also cover phenomena relating to the transport of neutral and charged particles in the so-called "intermediate" energy range, from 20 MeV to a few gigaelectron volts.
