The Three Miles Island accident highlighted the fundamental importance of the human-machine interface and the structure of operating procedures in nuclear power plants.

Given the size of its nuclear fleet, France developed and implemented the concept of "state-controlled operation" and a fully computerized man-machine interface in the early 1980s.

This trend has spread to other countries with nuclear reactors of various types and designations. All future reactor projects proposed today adopt these basic concepts.
