Radioactive waste. Operational management

Much raw radioactive waste is not processed immediately, or is not processed in line with the industrial processes that produce it in large quantities. It is then stored. This may be to await the decay of activity, to facilitate treatment operations, effluent discharges, the completion of treatment processes or administrative procedures, or in the past for any other reason (historical military or civilian waste). Buffer storage facilities are located in or near production workshops, to await the return of raw waste. These are known as INBs. Buffer storage should not be confused with storage of waste packages awaiting disposal, i.e. ready for their final fate in the more or less distant future.
