Warehousing is an indispensable "buffer" function in process management.
Whether for the storage of spent fuel or radioactive waste packages, there are well-developed, durable techniques that can perform this function for periods significantly exceeding fifty years, if need be.
The considerable feedback we have accumulated on spent fuel and waste repositories confirms the very high level of safety and maturity of these techniques, and is a very important factor in the robustness of the use of nuclear-generated electricity in relation to the difficulties sometimes encountered in obtaining complete long-term management systems. In the case of waste packages, for example, very compact and durable storage capacity concepts exist, enabling these packages to be stored, if need be, for as long as the decision to build a final disposal facility...
