In the absence of external disturbances and wall imperfections, the boundary layer developing on a flat plate is uniform in the direction transverse to the flow (two-dimensional) and is well described by self-similar solutions, such as the Blasius solution . The scenario of transition to turbulence in the two-dimensional boundary layer is now well understood and often referred to as "classical". It is illustrated in figure
