ABSTRACT
Low energy longitudinal vortices can be generated upstream of a laminar boundary layer by means of small roughness elements. Within the boundary layer these vortices induce alternating high and low speed regions that can stabilize the boundary layer and delay transition to turbulence. If confirmed in situations of practical interest, this effect could lead to significant reductions in viscous drag and therefore fuel consumption.

INTRODUCTION
