Systems exchanging heat between a phase-change material and an external medium are differentiated by the type of heat input and output (transfer fluid, transfer mode), boundary conditions and exchange concept. Transfer can take place :
via a separating surface between the two media;
by direct contact between the phase-change material and a fluid.
The first concept, for example, corresponds to the molding of castings, while the second is illustrated by the manufacture of fertilizer pellets, milk powder or lead shot, or more simply by the melting of a block of ice in ambient air.
